OnTrack Reading Word Lists

About half the people using my website come here looking for lists of one, two, three and four syllable words. Now that you’re here, you have a couple of options.

NEW! Purchase Entire Set of Word Lists at Lulu.com

If you are looking for several lists, and might want others later, the most time-saving option is to purchase the book OnTrack Reading Comprehensive Word Lists from the print-on-demand website Lulu.com. The 151-page book contains 100 separate word lists organized by sounds and is available in either an inexpensive PDF format that you can download, or as a coil-bound book. If you click the above link, you will find a Preview of the book when you get to Lulu.com. The preview includes the Table of Contents so you can see how the lists are organized and what sounds are covered (essentially all of them.)

If you are looking for just one particular list, or have plenty of time to download individual lists one at a time, most of the lists in the above book are here on the Ontrack Reading website. Go to Comprehensive Word Lists to find them.

Originally, I wrote the word lists for this website, but I’ve found that it is difficult to edit them here. (There are 100 separate lists organized by consonant and vowel sounds.) Therefore, be forewarned that some of the word lists on this site contain typos, or other obvious editing issues. That said, they are quite usable for most purposes and if you only are looking for a few lists (or have a lot of time on your hands) the free word lists on this site should serve your purpose.

The Source of the Words on the Various Lists

A 7,000-word database was constructed using the words in a children’s dictionary, so the lists are not comprehensive in the sense of including all words. Where they are comprehensive is that all sounds in a typical phonics curriculum are included, along with all of the common spellings of those sounds. In particular, the lists are organized to closely follow the curriculum I use at OnTrack Reading as laid out in the OnTrack Reading Advanced Code Workbook described on the next page.
