Vowel Sounds - 1 Syllable
On this Page of the Guide you will find PDF files that you can download listing one-syllable words containing specific vowel sounds. The list for each vowel sound is organized by spellings of the sound.
Words with more difficult consonant spellings are placed lower on each list. At the end of each segment of a list, words containing consonant spellings that are not explicitly taught in the OnTrack Reading curriculum are indicated with an asterisk (*). In addition, words containing consonant spellings that are considered so irregular that they should not be taught as consistent spellings of a sound are marked with a double asterisk (**).
The lists on this page are organized in the order of presentation in the OnTrack Reading curriculum. Vowel sounds like /ow/ and /oe/ are clustered together, and taught one after the other, to make it clear how the spellings overlap across sounds in English. For example, the digraph ow can be the /ow/ sound in cow or the /oe/ sound in crow.
