The /or/ sound has four spellings, or (orchid), orr (sorrow), ar (warden), and arr (warrant). These word lists are arranged both by spelling and by the chunk that the spelling occurs. They can be a valuable resource for locating words to illustrate a certain pattern or to find words to practice reading that pattern.
Although the OnTrack Reading curriculum emphasizes making a “perfect pronunciation” for spelling, most words ending in "or" will be found on the list of /er/ spellings.
Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, 183 of them are multisyllable words containing the vowel sound /or/.
Note on the word divisions: Each word is divided into chunks determined by the unique and highly effective OnTrack Reading Multisyllable Method. The chunks are not syllables.
