The /z/ sound has six common spellings, se, s, ss, z, zz, and ze. The digraph se is a member of a class of Ending Digraphs comprised of ce, ge, me, ne, se, te, ve, and ze, each of which represents a sound of its first letter. It is found only at the end of a word, or at the end of a chunk within a multisyllable word.
The "se" spelling is the only one of the eight Ending Digraphs that represents more than one sound. It can be the /s/ sound in "moose" or the /z/ sound in "noise".
Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, 22 of them are words with the /z/ sound spelled "se".
Note on the word divisions: Each word is divided into chunks determined by the unique and highly effective OnTrack Reading Multisyllable Method. The chunks are not syllables.
