The /z/ sound has six common spellings, se, s, ss, z, zz, and ze. The most common spelling of the /z/ sound is the letter s but never at the beginning of a word. There, the letter z is used. But the letter s is used at the beginning of chunks within a word, so children do need to become proficient at testing the /z/ sound in words like "noi-sy" and "jer-sey".
Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, 203 of them are words with the /z/ sound spelled "s".
