/sh/ Sound Spelled S or SS Word List
OnTrack Reading Phonics Program
Teach your student the phonics advanced code in as little as 8 weeks with our 170-page workbook and instruction manual.
The s and ss spellings of the /sh/ sound are found in few enough English words to justify teaching them as exceptions as they are encountered, but here is a list of those found in the database.
In each word on this list the "s" or "ss" is followed by a "u". If you take the time to say these words with a /ue/ sound (as in cue), you will see how a perfect pronunciation could be invoked for each one of them. Pronounce "tissue" as "tiss-ue" several times quickly and you will feel the /sh/ sound creeping in to the pronunciation. This is true of a great many words where a /ue/ spelling is present, by the way, including the common "ture" ending.
Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, ten of them are words with the /sh/ sound spelled either "s" or "ss".
Note on the word divisions: Each word is divided into chunks determined by the unique and highly effective OnTrack Reading Multisyllable Method. The chunks are not syllables.
