Besides the s spelling, the /s/ sound has six more common spellings, c, ce, ss, sc, st, and se. The digraph ce is a member of a class of Ending Digraphs comprised of ce, ge, me, ne, se, te, ve, and ze, each of which represents a sound of its first letter. It is found only at the end of a word, or at the end of a chunk within a multisyllable word.
The digraph "ce" follows the Rule of c in that it represents the /s/ sound.
Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, 87 of them are words with the /s/ sound spelled "ce".
