Besides the s spelling, the /s/ sound has six more common spellings, c, ce, ss, sc, st, and se.
The "c" spelling follows a rule, that is nearly one hundred percent accurate. Known as the Rule of c the rule specifies that the letter "c" represents the /s/ sound only when followed by one of the letters "e", "i", or "y". Otherwise, it represents the /k/ sound.
Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, 205 of them are words with the /s/ sound spelled "c".
