The /j/ sound has several spellings, j, g, ge, dge, dg, and dj. The digraph ge is a member of a class of Ending Digraphs comprised of ce, ge, me, ne, se, te, ve, and ze, each of which represents a sound of its first letter. It is found only at the end of a word, or at the end of a chunk within a multisyllable word.
Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, 82 of them are one-syllable words with the /j/ sound spelled "ge".
