The /g/ sound has five common spellings, g, gg, gh, gu, and gue. The gu spelling of the /g/ sound is always found at the beginning of a word or chunk. It appears in enough words that it warrants teaching it as a digraph. Teaching it also simplifies matters since it removes the need to add additional sounds to digraphs like "ui" (guide) and "ue" (guess), or the need to create new digraphs like "uar" (guard) and "uy" (guy).
Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, ten of them are words with the /g/ sound spelled "gu".
