The /g/ sound has five common spellings, g, gg, gh, gu, and gue. This list of one-syllable words includes separate lists for the initial blends gl and gr. Only the one-syllable words in the database are listed to keep the list size manageable.
Words in the list that would violate a Rule of g similar to the Rule of c are noted, and are the reason that only the Rule of c is emphasized in the OnTrack Reading curriculum. A Rule of g just isn’t as reliable a rule, especially in one-syllable words that a young reader will encounter first.
Of the 7,000 words in the database constructed from a popular children’s dictionary, 163 of them are one-syllable words with the /g/ sound spelled "g".
