The OnTrack Reading Advanced Code Phonics Program begins where instruction in the phonics Basic Code (one letter to one sound) leaves off. It consists of a 170-page phonics workbook guided by a comprehensive Instruction manual. The program requires one-on-one instruction by a parent, tutor, or teacher throughout.
It can be used by a homeschooling parent moving on beyond Basic Code instruction, or by a parent, tutor, or teacher seeking a remedial phonics course to catch a child up on phonics auditory skills and code knowledge. It takes a child all the way through four- and five-syllable words on completion of the course.
Lesson Structure
The Scope and Sequence assumes 42 lesson periods of forty minutes each plus an additional forty-minute homework/review period on a day following each lesson. Both the lessons and the homework sessions require direct supervision so that mistakes are corrected promptly.
The timing of the lessons is based on my experience working with nearly 200 struggling readers of varying ages over a decade of use. A significant amount of reading time is built into the homework phase and can be used to work on fluency, vocabulary, spelling, and comprehension.
