Free One-Syllable and Multisyllable Word Lists on this Site

This section of the Guide is composed primarily of PDF files that you can download composed of reasonably comprehensive word lists organized in various ways. Each separate page in this section concentrates on a specific type of list.

For example, the first page covers one-syllable words containing a specific vowel sound. The vowel sounds are listed in the order they occur in the OnTrack Reading Advanced Code Workbook.

Each list is organized by spelling of the targeted sound.

Important: Read My Take on Dyslexia to get the most from this website. Most people find my website while looking for word lists. You might have noticed that I call it A Guide to Overcoming Your Child’s Reading Problems. I truly believe that if you familiarize yourself with the information on this site, the children you are usually trying to help with these multiple word lists could benefit beyond what you can now imagine.

Using These Word Lists

These word lists are provided for your convenience, however you might decide to make use of them. The OnTrack Reading Phonics Curriculum does not involve teaching each of these lists explicitly, but the lists are ordered in a manner consistent with the order which sounds are presented in the curriculum.

I have found this sort of list to be most useful when attempting to write short stories that a child who has progressed to a certain point in the curriculum will be able to read. With such a list available, it’s fairly easy to pick out a number of words that suggest a theme, build a story around them, and then use the rest of the list to add words as the story is developed.

In the OnTrack Reading Phonics Curriculum, as sounds are covered sequentially, the words from earlier lists are also available to be used in the stories since the child should already be familiar with the spellings. Furthermore, it is useful to mix, for example, /ow/ and /oe/ words using the same spellings so that the child gets some practice trying alternative pronunciations for a spelling such as the ow in both cow and show.

Making Your Own Manipulatives

These lists are also very useful if you want to make your own set of manipulatives. Just set up a table in a program like Word and input a number of words from the lists. Print them on a heavier stock and cut them into individual cards. I’ve used cards like this, unlaminated, for years with client after client and they hold up well. If I decide to change the list, or add a few words, or just want to get a new set, I just repeat the process. If you set the table up correctly, all you have to do is cut on the lines and you quickly have a set of durable manipulatives which you can easily modify in the future.
